If for a director inspiration stems from an image or a face, for a producer it often coincides with the urgency of bringing an idea to light. What is your editorial “muse”? What precise element in a script or a talent makes you say: “This project needs to exist”?

First and foremost, I have to fall in love with the idea. After that, I am struck by the narrative urgency and the sincerity of the story—the intersection of necessity and vision. I need to perceive something authentic and necessary to truly believe in the project. I have to sense a certain potential, because it needs to be capable of standing out, communicating with the audience, and conveying a deep message in a completely novel way.

Are there any films or series that you cherish not just as a viewer, but as emotional and professional coordinates in your daily work?

Yes, there are works I consider true emotional compasses because they remind me of the power that cinema and audiovisual media have to create connections, provoke questions, and leave lasting impressions. When it comes to aesthetic vision, I love the symmetry of Kubrick and Wes Anderson, but I also deeply cherish less constructed images linked to documentary cinema (cinema del reale), because I am a lover of truth.

Ti gratifica e ti delude.

Every production is a micro-universe that is created and then dissolves, leaving something profound in whoever orchestrated it. Thinking about your most recent challenges, what is the last thing you discovered or rediscovered about yourself in the silence that follows the end of a wrap?

Over time, I have produced short films, documentaries, and commercials, all with different dynamics. However, what they have in common is teamwork, planning, and also uncertainty. Therefore, the ability to adapt to the unexpected is fundamental, and it is often during difficulties that the most valuable resources emerge. It requires a lot of courage and a great deal of patience. When everything comes to an end and the silence arrives, you realize that the journey has transformed you. It is a profession that tempers you for life. It rewards you, and it disappoints you.

Seen from the outside, cinema seems to be made entirely of magic and illusions; for those who produce it, however, it is a profession of extreme lucidity and concreteness. What is the latest “false myth” or cliché about this world that you have broken free from, perhaps discovering a new and stronger professional maturity?

Over the years, I have abandoned the idea that a good producer must always have everything under control. I realized that competence does not lie in predicting every single eventuality, but in knowing how to navigate even when circumstances change without warning. Working in film—and in the audiovisual world in general—requires a continuous dialogue between vision and reality, between creativity and problem-solving skills. Professional maturity came when I started viewing the unexpected not as an obstacle to be avoided, but as an inevitable and often precious part of the creative and production process. The system, to say the least, is quite peculiar, and working with public funds implies a massive commitment with often exhausting wait times. Over the years, I have also distanced myself from certain dynamics as a personal choice.

In a market that increasingly tends toward standardization and formats pre-packaged by algorithms, how do you protect the cultural biodiversity of a story? What does defending the craftsmanship (artigianato) of cinema mean to you today?

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work as well. Algorithms, on the other hand, are useful tools for understanding trends and behaviors, but they cannot replace the ability to intercept what does not yet exist, nor can they replace intuition and creative risk. To protect cultural biodiversity, we must understand that this work is made of listening, care, and responsibility—it places people and ideas at the center, ahead of models and statistics. That is where cinema continues to renew itself and preserve its cultural strength. To defend this craftsmanship, we must believe that every project needs a tailor-made path, which is essential for bringing quality to the details.

What is the single image (a photograph, a film frame, a piece of art) that best represents the very essence of cinema for you?

I choose an important and symbolic image tied to the magic of cinema created in the early 1980s—a true visual synthesis of the idea of cinema as wonder, capable of telling a story in a single frame.

This frame has the ability to transport us beyond the boundaries of reality, allowing us to observe the world with new eyes thanks to the power of imagination. It is no surprise that this silhouette became the symbol of Amblin Entertainment, the production company founded by Steven Spielberg. Indeed, contained within a single frame are the themes that run through most of his cinema: wonder breaking into everyday life, the gaze of childhood, the desire for adventure, and the thin line between reality and dreams.
