Hello Sergey, can you talk about you and how did you start with photography?

It was in 2009, when I was 17 y.o. my grandmother bought me a simple digital camera. From that time everything changed in my life cause I was really even didn’t expect that in 12 years it will be a main hobby which will slowly flow into my job and a reason of my life.

How “Young and free” is born?

I have been photographing a nude male body since 2012. Once I took a long break – when I lived in China for three years – but when I returned to Ukraine, I immediately returned to one of my favorite genres in photography. This series has dragged on for me: with each new shoot, I find new meanings, and the desire to continue only intensifies. The first pictures in “Young and free” (it was in 2017) were the same as I originally saw this series: calm, erotic. I didn’t want to shock; I wanted to shoot nude and gentle portraits of young people in confined spaces. But then something inside me switched: like a toggle switch, bam – and that’s it. I don’t want to rent in apartments anymore; I don’t want peace of mind. Slowly, pictures of two or three people began to appear, in one of the last works – six people in the frame. These cards are dynamic, blurry, vibrant, filled with emotion. Forest, lakes, fields, rivers, canyons, sands. This is adventure. The thrill is creating these works: getting ready, collecting “models”, going to another city at night, drinking coffee at gas stations. In the photo – my friends, students, acquaintances, just those who want to try themselves in the role of “model”. Some challenge themselves whether they will be able to take part in such a project; I am glad that everything is fine with them. As long as there are naked guys who are ready to participate in my projects, I will do this. I am sure there will be many more works of interest to the viewer. If I see myself starting to repeat myself, I will stop.
Now I have absolutely no desire to photograph girls. Maybe because I don’t know how or don’t want to be able to.  What I do and with whom has a certain sacred meaning for me. The body has some kind of attractive property – especially naked. Even so: only naked. It catches the eye, affects a wide variety of spectators. 

Which are your inspirations?

Everything insperes me actually: photography, movies, my students with their works and triumphs and mine as well. Good projects which I do and I see response from the audience allows me to think about new and new series to do.

How did you find your stories? What is the first thing that you make before start a project?

I never set myself any goals or objectives; I just do what I get the most out of. Bored or tired – I move on to other topics. Different series are made in different ways. Some are thoughtful and long-termed, other – very spontaneous. Depends on topic and time which I have to realize it. 

Ciao Sergey. Ti va di parlarci di te e di come ti sei avvicinato alla fotografia?

Risale al 2009, avevo 17 anni. Mia nonna mi comprò una semplice macchina fotografica digitale. Da quel momento è cambiato tutto nella mia vita, perché davvero non mi sarei aspettato che in 12 anni sarebbe diventato il mio hobby principale, lentamente evolutosi nel mio lavoro e nella mia ragione di vita.

Come è nato il progetto “Young and Free”?

Dal 2012 fotografo corpi maschili nudi. Una volta mi sono preso una lunga pausa – quando ho vissuto in Cina per tre anni – ma di ritorno in Ucraina sono ritornato a uno dei miei generi fotografici preferiti. Questo progetto mi ha travolto: ad ogni nuovo scatto trovo nuovi significati, e il desiderio di continuare accresce solamente. Le prime foto di “Young and Free” (era il 2017) sono state le stesse di come inizialmente ho immaginato questa serie: calma, erotica. Non volevo scioccare, volevo fotografare nudi e delicati ritratti di gente giovane, in spazi circoscritti. Ma in quel momento qualcosa in me è scattato: come un interruttore, bam, e basta. Non voglio più affittare appartamenti, non voglio tranquillità. Lentamente le immagini di due o tre persone cominciarono ad apparire in uno degli ultimi lavori, sei persone all’interno di una cornice.
Queste foto sono dinamiche, sfocate, vibranti, piene di emozione. Foresta, laghi, campi, fiumi, canyon, sabbie. Questa è avventura. L’emozione è creare queste opere: prepararsi, reclutare modelle, andare in un’altra città di notte, bere un caffè alle stazioni di servizio. Nella foto – miei amici, studenti, conoscenti, coloro che vogliono cimentarsi nel ruolo di “modello”. Alcuni si chiedono se saranno in grado di partecipare a tale progetto; sono lieto che tutto vada bene con loro. Finché ci saranno ragazzi nudi pronti a partecipare ai miei progetti, lo farò. Sono sicuro che ci saranno molte altre opere di interesse per lo spettatore. Se mi accorgo di essere ripetitivo, mi fermerò.
Ora non ho assolutamente alcun desiderio di fotografare  ragazze. Forse perché non so come o non sono in grado di farlo. Quello che faccio, e con chi, ha un certo significato sacro per me. Il corpo ha una sorta di proprietà attrattiva, soprattutto da nudo.  Cattura lo sguardo, colpisce una grande varietà di spettatori.

Da chi trai ispirazione?

Tutto mi ispira, veramente. Fotografie, film, i miei studenti con i loro lavori e i loro trionfi, e i miei anche. I bei progetti che faccio e di cui vedo accoglienza nel pubblico mi permettono di pensare a nuove e nuove serie da realizzare.

Come trovi le tue storie? Qual è la cosa che fai prima di tuffarti in un progetto? 

Non mi pongo mai degli obiettivi, faccio solo ciò da cui ottenere il massimo. Quando sono stufo o annoiato mi sposto su altri temi. Diverse serie sono realizzate in diversi modi. Alcune sono riflessive e a lungo termine, altre molto spontanee. Dipende dal soggetto e dal tempo che ho per realizzarlo.
